ModRetro Chromatic Clear Edition - $149, a Handheld for Game Boy Cartridges With Visible Circuitry

Most retro handhelds hide modern parts inside an old-fashioned shell, but the ModRetro Chromatic does the opposite and shows off its circuitry. Seeing the board through the clear case reminded me of those translucent 90s electronics, and I fell for it at first sight.

📸 Product Tour

You can see the circuit pattern through the red translucent body

The purple model, with a standout D-pad and colored buttons

The screen and button layout resemble the original Game Boy

Each color has a different level of transparency and button color

🔍 Why It Caught My Eye

A design that doesn't hide its circuitry

Instead of covering the board, exposing it became the decoration. A clear case has its own charm, since you can see every button and every screw.

It takes real cartridges

It's not an emulator. You slot in actual cartridges, so I imagine it would be fun to pull out the games I already own and play them again.

Color options

The photo with red, purple, lime, and smoke lined up in a row was gorgeous. It would also look great as an object on a desk.

🤔 What Gives Me Pause

Build quality and battery

Photos alone can't tell me about the finish or battery life. I'd need to read more reviews to judge the quality for the price.

You need cartridges

Since it plays real cartridges, it's far less useful without games. You'd also need to factor in the price of used cartridges.

🛒 Pre-Purchase Checklist

❌ Not recommended for

• People who only want to play emulated games without cartridges
• People who care about domestic after-sales service in Korea

🎯 Final Verdict

The Chromatic Clear Edition draws people in with "design on display" rather than performance. I think just having it on my desk would be very satisfying.

Once the battery and finish reviews and a way to buy it in Korea are confirmed, it could become a genuine want-to-own candidate.
