PocketBook Verta - $198, an e-reader that adds the fun of choosing a color

E-readers come in almost nothing but black or gray, so there's none of the fun of picking a color the way you would with a paperback cover. PocketBook's new Verta goes right at that. It looks like you can choose the body color without putting a case on it, and that caught my eye.

✨ 3-Line Summary

  • 👍 Biggest plus: You can pick a color instead of settling for black or gray
  • 👎 Downside: Screen resolution, weight, and where to buy it in Korea still need to be confirmed
  • 🎯 Recommended for: People who want a light, simple e-reader and just want to focus on reading

🔍 Why It Caught My Attention

Color for an e-reader

Most of these devices look like a black slab, so just having color options changes how it looks on a desk. It's a small thing, but it's something you'll use for a long time, so it appealed to me.

Two lines: black-and-white and color

If you only read text, go for the black-and-white Verta; if you're curious about comics or colored covers, pick the Verta Color. The way to choose is clear, which I like.

A simple setup

The physical buttons along the bottom and the TTS label visible in the images stood out to me. It feels designed around the reading experience rather than a pile of complicated features.

🤔 What Gives Me Pause

I couldn't confirm the specs

I couldn't confirm the screen size, resolution, or battery capacity. Because it's color e-ink, the color model may differ from the black-and-white one in resolution.

Use in Korea

PocketBook has weak support for Korean bookstore apps, so you'd need to work out in advance where you'd get your books. Buying on price alone could turn out to be inconvenient.

📋 Product Features (Subjective Ratings)

  • Design: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
  • Portability: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
  • Practicality: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
  • Value for money: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (at $198)

🛒 Before You Buy

✅ Recommended for

  • Anyone who wants an e-reader in a variety of colors
  • Anyone who wants to focus on reading without complicated features

❌ Not recommended for

  • Anyone who wants to read Korean bookstore e-books comfortably
  • Anyone who only buys products with confirmed specs

🎯 Final Verdict

The Verta isn't an e-reader that changes performance much; it adds "the joy of choosing your device." Since it's something you'll keep close for a long time, small matters of taste like this turn out to matter more than I expected.

If the specs and purchase route get confirmed, it's a candidate I definitely want to look at again.
